Hope Blooms Brings Solar Power and Community Impact Together
Hope Blooms, a Halifax-based community organization, is taking another leap forward in promoting sustainability and youth empowerment. Their latest initiative, to install a solar tracker, brings advanced renewable energy technology to the forefront of their efforts, combining environmental action with hands-on education for youth.
Grant award: $34,000
The solar tracker is a renewable energy system that follows the sun’s movement to maximize energy production. It’s one of the first implemented by a community organization in Nova Scotia. Designed to reduce Hope Blooms’ carbon footprint, it also serves as an educational resource for youth to learn about renewable energy systems and climate solutions. “By bringing the solar tracker here, we’re showing our youth and community members what’s possible. This isn’t just about sustainability—it’s about innovation and empowerment,” said Veronica Gutierrez, Director of Growth and Sustainability at Hope Blooms.
Since its start, Hope Blooms has grown from a small garden plot into a vibrant social enterprise that empowers over 300 youth and their families. With more than 10,000 square feet of urban gardens, the organization has long integrated sustainability into its operations. The solar tracker builds on this foundation, introducing renewable energy to the community and encouraging conversations around climate action.
Hope Blooms’ impact extends beyond single projects. Revenues from its social enterprises—like salad dressings and herbal teas—are reinvested into scholarships and subsidized food programs. Over $250,000 in scholarships have been awarded to youth, and their Fair Food Market as provided affordable fresh produce to families while supporting local farmers and cutting food waste.
Youth remain at the heart of Hope Blooms’ mission. Through activities like managing farmers' markets and participating in weekly experiments in Green Labs, they gain valuable skills and leadership experience. The Solar Tracker adds another layer, allowing young participants to explore renewable energy technologies and understand their role in tackling climate challenges.
Looking to the future, Hope Blooms aims to expand its reach with initiatives like a Youth Climate Summit, where young leaders can exchange ideas and showcase solutions to pressing environmental and social challenges. “We’re creating a space where youth lead the way—whether it’s through climate action, entrepreneurship, or community engagement. They’re not just participants; they’re change-makers,” Veronica said.
The solar tracker installation reflects Hope Blooms’ ongoing commitment to sustainability and community engagement. It shows how grassroots efforts can make meaningful contributions to environmental progress while empowering future generations. For more information, visit Hope Blooms.
